Companion Planting - too much bother?

It can be for sure! But it doesn't need to be.

Companion Planting can be great for your garden - helping plants to grow, keeping bugs away, feeding the soil. Yes, there are many good reasons to learn a bit more about this handy garden idea.

My first tip is to print a list - here's mine: Companion Planting List.

Tip 2: Plan your garden beds - draw them up and write down what you'd like to plant in them each season (write the plants on sticky notes so you can move them around the beds). Check against your companion planting list and move if need.

Tip 3: Plant some flowers - great to attract good bugs and bees to the garden and they'll look good too! Marigolds and nasturtiums are great.

Tip 4: Keep plants like cabbages that attract a lot of bugs away from your other plants if you can, then you can focus on those without the bugs affecting all of your garden.

Tip 5: Rotate your plants each season and let the beds have a rest (rest one bed per season if you can). Your soil will thank you.

Happy planting (it's not hard, I promise :)

Growing garlic is pretty easy. Garlic is truly one of the most useful little additions to your cooking (or your garlic bread :)

Garlic purchased from the store can be bleached (it's not meant to be white!) so avoid the chemicals and grow your own.

Raised Bed Gardening, is this for you?

I'm a Raised Bed Gardening fan. I've just dug out some last season plants and I must say, I love my raised garden beds. They are so easy to dig in and easy to weed.

I have about 7 raised beds now (they seem to multiply!) all of various shapes, materials and sizes.

You really only need a low bed ie one timber sleeper high to make it easier to dig in the soil. However, the higher the easier on your back. So think about the height you'd like to work at before you make your final decision.

Vegetable gardening tip for peas and more peas

My neighbour called in the other day and gave me a vegetable gardening tip for my pea patch.

He's a farmer so he's used to growing paddocks of peas. I asked why a few of my plants were a bit yellow, he said too much water.

Apparently peas need to stress a little bit. So don't over water them and you should have a healthy crop of peas :)

The kids are loving picking and eating peas straight from the garden. Plant lots and freeze any not eaten. Wondering if I'll have any left to freeze!

Tomatoes are very rewarding to grow in your veggie patch.

I live in a sub tropical area so Cherry Tomatoes are best here. They don't seem to attract the fruit flies as much. They provide heaps of fruit and the kids love them too.

You can grow your tomatoes in the garden, or in pots. There are even upside down planters if you don't have much room.

There are a few things you need to know before you get started so please read on.

Water, water everywhere

Two days after Christmas we saw our first flood. Fortunately for the horses (or not, I'll explain later) the flood happened during the day. Apparently most times here they occur during the night.

We live on low lying ground so we knew the land would go under and it was pretty amazing to watch how quickly the water crept up!

Our house and everything was fine but the horses injured themselves in the stables - where we'd put them to keep safe! Not good.

Back to the veggie patches now. You wouldn't think they would need water after being two feet underwater for a day so I've left the watering alone.

Then I forgot about the Raised Vegetable Gardens doh! The water didn't get that high and the poor beetroots are looking a little neglected!

Well that was my Christmas to forget! Hope you all having a great end of year break and if you need to de-stress, get out in the veggie patch :)

House those Chickens

My Chickens are free range during the day (mostly because they escape!) and sleep in their yard at night.

You don't need a fancy hen house for them, you can get very creative with your chicken coop.

Ours is an old stock crate with some iron to keep it waterproofed and an extra yard attached with star droppers and chicken wire.

If you live in a residential yard you can buy or build a moveable yard, a "chicken tractor". Being mobile means your chickens will always have some grass to peck in.

If you want to build your own - there's a Building a Chicken Coop link on my Raising Chickens page for an ebook with plans for the perfect coop.

What's happening in your garden?

Hubby has just built me the veggie patch I asked for (a while ago) He first built me a more compact raised garden bed which is fantastic, but just doesn't fit enough plants. I wanted a long one foot high garden. We then added some purchased organic garden soil and put up some trellis for peas and beans and some netting to keep the pesky chickens and cats out.

Now I have to do some planning so I don't plant willy nilly - I like to keep my companion planting in mind and I don't want to plant anything that will attract too many bugs - I'll keep them in a raised garden for easy maintenance.

So much to do and a great excuse to spend more time outside :)

Enjoy your garden!
