Top Dozen Fruit and Vegetables to Grow

Another very important consideration when deciding what to grow is to consider the Dirty Dozen. The “Environmental Working Group” has tested 43 fruit and vegetables and ranked them in order of highest to lowest pesticide load. Check out their website if you would like to look into this further. www.ewg.org

The greatest amount of pesticides found:

1: Peaches

2: Apples

3: Sweet Bell Peppers

4: Celery

5: Nectarines

6: Strawberries

7: Cherries

8: Lettuce

9: Grapes

10: Pears

11: Spinach

12: Potatoes

It’s interesting also to look at those at the bottom of the list – those with the least chemicals. Perhaps you can focus on growing the items in the top 10 or 12 and continue to buy those on the bottom of the list until you can get everything you want growing in your garden.

The least amount of Pesticides found:

: Onions

: Avocado

: Frozen Corn

: Pineapples

: Mango

: Frozen Sweet Peas

: Asparagus

: Kiwi

: Bananas

: Cabbage
